Wokingham Council Expands Care for Children

Nearly 150 children are in care in the Wokingham area because they are unable to live with their own family for more than 24 hours.

In Wokingham, nearly 150 children are currently in care, unable to stay with their families for more than 24 hours. This responsibility falls on local authorities, which manage housing and living arrangements for these children.

The Wokingham Borough Council’s children’s services oversees 147 children across the area, including Earley and Woodley. Typically, these children live in homes or foster care.

Once they turn 18, these young individuals are considered 'care leavers', and the council supports 285 of them aged 18 to 25. A recent report highlights improvements in accommodation for both children in care and care leavers.

It reveals that in 2022, a new semi-independent living provision was launched for those aged 16 and above. Plans are underway to double this capacity by 2025 with an additional property.

The report emphasises the importance of this provision in helping older children develop independence, with 24-hour support available. Two new properties also offer 10 rooms each for care leavers, all with bathrooms and shared community spaces. A recently renovated property adds another 10 rooms, which are now fully occupied.

On September 17, a presentation on the report was shared with the council’s children’s services committee. Adam Davis, assistant director for social care and early help, mentioned ongoing projects aimed at increasing accommodation for care leavers. He stated, "We want to ensure the right balance of beds as young people transition from foster care to independent living."
