Access to Wokingham was further limited this weekend after one of the few remaining southern routes into town was blocked.
Finchampstead Road and Heathlands Road remain closed while work continues on the South Wokingham Distributor Road.
One of the only ways through had been the ‘Gardners Green’ ford in Redlake Lane, where drivers were splashing through to reach appointments and shops. On Thursday, January 8, footage showed vehicles, including a Fiat 500, navigating the ford.
Rising water levels have made the ford inaccessible. Although a barrier was put in place, a 4x4 driver managed to bypass it, crossed the ford and knocked the barrier down.
That leaves only a few options: Bearwood Road and King St Lane through Winnersh; the A329M/A329 via St Crispins; and a residential ‘rat‑run’ via Woosehill Lane, Meadow Road and Oxford Road. Barkham Road via the level crossing is also open but facing long delays because of frequent roadworks.
The closure of these roads continues to disrupt travel around Wokingham.
