Residents in Theale are being polled about whether they should stay in West Berkshire or head to Reading instead.
Residents of Theale are being asked whether they want to remain part of West Berkshire or switch to Reading.
This follows Reading Borough Council's plans to annex five villages on its western borders, including Theale, as part of a government proposal to reshape local councils.
Currently, residents in Calcot, Tilehurst, Purley-on-Thames, Pangbourne, and Theale receive services like bin collection and school management from West Berkshire Council.
West Berkshire has branded Reading's move as ‘hostile’.
The situation escalated in spring when West Berkshire Council unexpectedly announced plans to merge with the Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire, aiming to create a larger authority.
Last week, around 70 locals attended a parish council meeting to discuss the Local Government Review and Reading's boundary proposal, calling for a poll.
Once the poll date is confirmed, details will be shared via the parish noticeboard near the Co-op, the council website, and Facebook page.
The parish notice states, “The poll gives Theale residents a chance to vote on whether to stay with West Berkshire or join Reading. While the final decision lies with the Secretary of State, it's vital for residents to voice their opinions. Your vote matters—please participate!”
It may take several years for the outcome of the local government review to take shape.
