Residents Rage Over Bin Collection Changes

The social media beasting of West Berkshire Council over the bin collection changes and pedestrianising Newbury Town Centre is in full swing.

The social media backlash against West Berkshire Council is heating up over its decision to change bin collection to every three weeks and pedestrianise Newbury Town Centre.

Despite petitions from locals and MP Olivia Bailey, the council remains firm on its plans. The ongoing social media debate has residents feeling unheard, with many voicing concerns about increased litter and rubbish accumulation.

Kev Fountain, a local resident, pointed out the growing rubbish problem near Swansdown Walk, while Pat Brown expressed frustration about the difficulty of managing recycling alone, noting, "I find it very disturbing. No one listens or cares."

Newbury Labour has proposed a bulk waste collection system that could generate nearly £250,000, aiming to reinstate bi-weekly collections. However, disillusionment with the political system runs deep, with Neale Hall commenting on the lack of difference between past and present councils and their failures in managing local issues.

David Marsh, leader of the Greens, claimed his party now has more members than Conservatives in the area, hinting at a competitive election in 2027. Meanwhile, the council insists the changes will save money and improve recycling habits, with early data suggesting the pedestrian scheme is benefiting local trade.

Supporters like Pete Braithwaite appreciate the safer, more lively town atmosphere, especially in the evenings, while the council defends its communication efforts regarding bin collection criteria. Stuart Gourley, the council's bins executive member, stated that they are committed to assisting residents facing challenges with waste management.

Residents have shared various suggestions for improving the pedestrianisation and bin collection, including enhancing bus services and providing larger bins. Local authorities are required to collect household waste, including recyclables, and must maintain weekly food waste pickups by 2026.
