Cycle Hub Plans Scrapped Amid New Initiatives

A hub for people to store their bikes securely in Reading town centre has been scrapped in favour of other cycle security projects across the town.

A secure bike storage hub in Reading town centre has been scrapped, with funds redirected to other cycling security projects in the area.

Initially announced in 2022, the cycle hub was set to offer 82 secure bike parking spots, a bike loan scheme, and a repair desk at a vacant unit in the Primark offices on West Street. However, in September 2023, Primark withdrew permission for the use of their premises.

A council spokesperson stated, "The funding for the Cycle Hub on West Street was awarded by Active Travel England (ATE). Following Primark's decision, the council couldn't find another venue within the funding timeframe, so the budget was reallocated to our wider Active Travel Capability Programme."

The reallocated funds are now being used to enhance existing cycle security measures, such as refurbishing the Reading Station northern interchange cycle hub, which includes repairs to cycle racks and improved lighting. They are also piloting secure cycle pods across the town centre and planning to introduce cycle hangars for residents lacking space for bike storage.

Despite the setback, the council remains committed to bike storage solutions. The spokesperson added, "While we're not actively seeking a new hub location right now, secure cycle parking is a key goal of our Transport Strategy. We're exploring alternative options to deliver these facilities, ensuring they are accessible and suitable for all users, including potential considerations for e-bikes and e-scooters."
