Council Tenant Fights for Essential Home Adaptations

A council tenant is in an ongoing clash for improvements to his living conditions.

A Lower Earley council tenant, Craig Faulkner, is fighting for better living conditions.

Living with his wife and two dogs, Craig has a spinal condition that limits his mobility. Despite receiving a hospital-style bed last March, he cannot access the bathroom facilities on the first floor.

He has requested a stair lift, but Wokingham Borough Council's occupational therapist (OT) has refused his plea. Craig stated, "I walk with a frame, but they still say no, no, no. No alternative has been offered. I have a hospital bed but no washing facilities on the ground floor." His GP and spinal consultant both support the need for a stair lift.

A report from the council's OT dismissed the request, citing a lack of engagement during their assessment. It stated, "Taking into consideration the above...I do not feel that I am able to support or recommend any adaptations to your property at this time." Craig contests these findings, declaring, "They are doing things wrongfully."

Adding to his troubles, his home is plagued with black mould. The council had previously relocated Craig and his family in 2022 while attempting to address the issue, but the mould has since returned. Craig has had Biocraft contractors use fogging to manage the mould temporarily.

Additionally, he claims that the council is trying to evict his family. The council has chosen not to comment on the matter.
