A search is on for a new manager to run the Caversham Post Office after its recent closure.
This post office, located at the Co-op on Henley Road, had been serving the community for years, offering services like sending letters and packages, collections, and everyday banking.
However, it closed recently following the resignation of the postmaster and the Co-op's withdrawal from Post Office use. Rumours about the closure began last December, and despite a six-week public consultation, the closure proceeded.
A spokesperson stated: “Henley Road Post Office in Caversham regrettably closed on Saturday, August 2 due to the resignation of the operator and the withdrawal of the premises for Post Office use. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
The Post Office is now on the lookout for a new operator and premises to serve local customers. Matt Rodda, Labour MP for Reading Central, has met with the Post Office to help find a retailer willing to host a new sub post office.
He remarked: “Post offices provide a vital local service, and it is very important for residents to have access to a post office close to where they live. I am calling on Post Office managers to work with local retailers to find another shop for a sub post office in the Henley Road area.”
An advertisement for a new postmaster is currently live, with applications closing on Thursday, October 9, although it may close early if enough interest is received. The Post Office is seeking a successful retailer to incorporate a Post Office Local into their existing or proposed business.
The fees for running the postal service range from £22,050 to £24,500 per year. The ideal candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, strong conversational abilities, and the capability to hire and train team members.
Mr Rodda added: “I was pleased to hear that the Post Office recognises the concern of local residents and that it is actively seeking new partners in the immediate area to host a new Post Office Local branch.”
Nearby post offices include the Caversham Post Office at 47 Hemdean Road, the one at 163-165 Caversham Road, and the Conisboro Local store in Caversham Heights. Residents have previously expressed concerns about reduced opening hours on the Caversham Gossip Facebook community page.
