Call for 20mph Limits After Fatal Crashes

A call has been made to introduce more 20mph speed limits after fatal and serious injuries on the roads in Reading.

A call has been made for more 20mph speed limits in Reading following a series of fatal and serious road incidents.

From 2018 to 2023, Reading Borough has witnessed eight fatal crashes and around 150 serious accidents, according to Crash Map UK.

Rob White, a Green Party councillor, is pushing for a wider rollout of 20mph zones, similar to those implemented in Wales in 2023. Currently, 20mph limits exist in areas like Newtown, West Reading, and Southcote.

At a recent traffic management meeting, Councillor White stated, "The number of fatalities and serious injuries on Reading's roads is too high. While some areas have 20mph limits, much of Reading is faster. A consistent approach would enhance road safety for everyone." He also highlighted the success of Wales's 20mph speed limit in improving safety.

In response, John Ennis, Reading's lead councillor for transport, acknowledged the council's commitment to reducing road casualties. He mentioned that implementing 20mph zones requires police enforcement to discourage speeding and should include features like speed bumps to make them more effective.

Cllr Ennis noted that proposals for 20mph zones need public consultation and funding. Recently, a £200,000 project was greenlit for Northcourt Avenue and Wellington Avenue, which will introduce 20mph restrictions and speed bumps.

Any traffic calming measures must be proposed by councillors or residents and prioritised by the highways team based on need, followed by design, consultation, and funding availability.

This discussion took place during a council meeting on September 11.
