A tribute has been paid to the "smart, formidable" Anne Shillcock, a founding member of the Bracknell Labour Party, who passed away on September 23.
Anne, who moved to Bracknell in the mid-1960s, co-founded the local branch with Jack Delbridge. Councillor Dr Roy Bailey (Labour, Town Centre & The Parks) expressed his sadness over her death, noting that she was in her 80s and had been unwell for some time.
Dr Bailey recalled meeting Anne in 1996, describing her as intelligent and insightful, with a remarkable presence that commanded attention. He praised her political talent and debating skills, particularly against opposing Tory views.
Despite her formidable nature, he highlighted her kindness, fairness, and outstanding people skills. Anne served as a Labour councillor for 28 years and was also Chair of governors at Kennel Lane Special School.
Former CLP Chair Austin McCormack shared his fond memories, agreeing that Anne was an exceptional woman whose loss will be felt deeply in the community. In 2023, she was featured in a BBC Berkshire article discussing her move to Bracknell and the concept of 15-minute cities.
