Berkshire Councils Extend Public Protection Partnership

A partnership between three councils in Berkshire focused on protecting the public, tackling anti-social behaviour and managing licences for bars and venues is being extended.

The partnership between Bracknell, Wokingham, and West Berkshire councils, aimed at public protection and tackling anti-social behaviour, is set to continue.

Established in 2017, the Public Protection Partnership handles tasks like monitoring food hygiene, processing licensing applications, and addressing noise complaints and flytipping.

Bracknell Forest councillors recently decided to extend the partnership instead of letting it expire in 2027. This was confirmed in a cabinet meeting led by Labour councillors.

Council leader Mary Temperton stated, “By sharing with West Berkshire, there are efficiencies from economies of scale. I recommend we enter the new arrangement as soon as possible.”

Paul Bidwell raised concerns about future challenges and opportunities for innovation within the partnership.

Damian James, assistant director of contract services, acknowledged the service's effectiveness but noted that potential local government reorganisations could impact the partnership. He suggested extending the service until March 31, 2029, to better understand future changes.

Bracknell Forest’s cabinet unanimously approved the extension on October 14, 2023. Meanwhile, Wokingham Borough Council, which brought some duties in-house in 2022, may be returning to the partnership, as hinted by Cllr Temperton, who noted they are ‘coming back into the fold’.
