Approval for Controversial Homes in Tilehurst

Plans for four new homes on one of the few remaining patches of green space in Tilehurst have been approved.

Plans for four new homes on a rare green space in Tilehurst have been given the green light, though concerns linger over the future of the remaining open area.

Residents worry that the new layout may promote antisocial behaviour, and neither the developer nor the councils seem keen to manage the space. There are also fears that increased traffic could lead to accidents. Objector Carly Baldwin voiced her concerns at the West Berkshire Council meeting, stating, "It is only a matter of time before there is a serious or even fatal accident."

The developer’s agent, Rebecca Hoad, defended the proposal, arguing that the land isn’t designated as open space and that they would manage it through a private contractor if necessary. Local councillor Clive Taylor echoed worries about potential antisocial behaviour, referencing issues near Foxcombe Drive and suggesting that lockable gates should be installed if the development goes ahead.

However, council planning officer Simon Till noted that installing gates would be expensive and that the council is unlikely to take on the responsibility for the area. The plans have been approved, pending a revised layout and a management plan for the open land, or else they will face rejection.
